~ Intro to Training Post (words not counted) ~

There’s something so precious about watching the determination of a 2 kilogram Pokémon tug on something twice its size, and the lengths they will go to to accomplish a nearly impossible task. Today, Elle is on the lookout for things that will peak the curiosity of a nosy bird Pokémon to inspire play.

~ Training Post Starts (start word count) ~

Elle gathered a cardboard paper towel roll and two shoe boxes. She remove the lids from the shoe boxes and placed them open side up. Then, she cut a hole in one short side of each box just large enough for an end of the paper towel roll to fit through. Finally, she connected all the pieces together with the paper towel roll in the center. It looked like a dumbbell when she was through.

Katrina spent hours with this bird toy called 'birdie tunnel'. Eventually Elle raised the height of the tube to the top of the box and created ramps and steps and climbing ropes for Katrina to reach it. Katrina went to great lengths to get to that tunnel, she would race through and start again from the other side. For every repeat, she tried to beat her personal record.

When Katrina got tired, she rested for an hour. By the time she was refreshed and ready, Elle had a new playground ready. Elle made a birdie maze, with the walls to the maze easily constructed from Lego. At first she made the maze more of a winding tunnel and coaxed Katrina through it with treats. As Katrina got better at finding her way, Elle made dead-ends and false passageways that caused her to have to evaluate her moves. Katrina tried to cheat by flying to the top of the wall to find her way, so Elle covered the top with a towel.

This game was not that tiresome for Katrina as it all involved simple walking and snacking. But it required an hour for Elle to finish yet another playground called 'play mat', so Katrina napped as her new playground was being constructed. What bird doesn't have the time of its life trying to remove the buttons from clothing or trying to disassemble jewelries? The play mat Elle maid offered all these opportunities and more. She took a towel and sew on plastic rings, keys, leather strips with beads, wooden cutouts and pretty much anything else she can think of that Katrina would enjoy.

When Katrina woke up, she had fun tugging on the items, just like the buttons on a shirt. Her efforts were spent trying to fold it back up or dragging it around behind her by one of the plastic rings. She had a good time being a tyrant with toys, always trying to bend them to her will and make them do things they weren't designed to do. She had a good time, though, and that's the point.

Elle and Katrina took a break from the fun games for the following hours. When the sun went down and the moon rose up, they had one last fun game. Elle made a little city out of appropriately sized Lego for Katrina and made up this game called 'Katzilla'. Katrina played the role of coming along to destroy and terrorize the city and all it's tiny, little people. It was Elle's job to portray the little Lego people running from Katrina and begging for their lives. As Katrina crashed her way through town, she showed little mercy for the Lego-ites. The compassionate monster tried to reassemble the city when she was through, although not to Legoville building code standards.

The entire day was spent well. The next day, Elle had some new vigorous games she can play with Katrina to help burn up some excess calories. All games included a verbal command to say at the start of the game, which lets Katrina know it's game time.

The first game was 'fetch & retrieve'. Elle gently tossed a small Koosh ball in the direction of Katrina, and said, "Catch it!" Katrina ran after the object and picked it up with her beak. "Good bird," Katrina said. The next step: Elle taught Katrina to bring the object back to her. She kept throwing the ball farther from Katrina, which required her to run long distances to fetch the item, forbidden from using her wings. Every time she returned the ball, Katrina said, "Great job" in a happy, excited tone of voice, and scratched her on the head.

The next game was called 'staircase dash'. Elle needed two people to play this game and a carpeted staircase. Elle's friend, Sarah, stood at the bottom of the stairs while Elle placed Katrina at the top of the stairs and gently nudged her to move downward. Sarah called Katrina and Katrina normally climbed down the stairs, using her feet and flapping her wings, getting lots of exercise.

Sarah then put Katrina down, quickly walked up the stairs and called her. Katrina immediately started chasing Katrina.

The next game was more basic, 'hide-and-seek'. Elle took Katrina to the basement, where Katrina has rarely been in and is unfamiliar. She put Katrina on the floor at one end of the room, and then walked away. Elle said, "Find me!" She went several yards, and then peeked around corners so Katrina can see her and then ducked her head back in. She made it a far enough distance so that Katrina will have to do a fair amount of walking at a good clip in order to chase after Elle.

By the end of the day, Elle found out that there were particular games Katrina liked, so she tried to make them part of their regular routine.

Just before Elle and Katrina went to sleep, Katrina evolved into a Staravia.

~ Role-play ~
A building was built just recently next to Violet City's Pokémon Center. Some people failed to understand its purpose on its early days, but it was a place of calamity. It is where trainers can come and drop off their Pokémon for adoption or to gather new Pokémon from weekly found Pokémon in the wild. Each one is special in their own way.

Elle and Katrina looked at all the Pokémon that was up for adoption. Elle's red eyes spotted one particular Pokémon that stood out to her among others. It was withdrawn on a corner with a tough expression painted on its face. Elle adopted the Pokémon, which was a Combusken whom she named 'Norris'.

Elle confidently stepped outside and was interested with Norris, so she brought it out of its spherical containment. "Hello, Norris! So, I'm Elle. This is Katrina. Right now, there are only three of us, but I'm sure we'll gain more friends in the future and grow into a respectable team," Elle spoke.

"What are we up to today," Norris replied with a question.

"Well, there's really no point in training you right now. As a trainer, defeating Falkner would be my first goal. But I've seen your records. You're just way too strong for Falkner that it would make the battle unfair and without a thrill."

"So?"

"So, Katrina and I will hunt for a wild Pokémon to fight or challenge other trainers to make her stronger. But first, I want to see you in action against a wild Pokémon. Even just once. Would that be alright?"

"Pokémon of my caliber follow only those trainers who have at least one gym badge. You don't even have one."

"Fair enough, that's alright. If we defeat Falkner without your aid, would you finally take orders from me, then?"

"Maybe."

Elle returned Norris back to its Poké Ball after they conversed. Both satisfied, she and Katrina traveled down the dirt path. They headed to the grass that was of an average color. The sun was shining brilliantly in the sky, illuminating the leaves of nearby trees as they searched for a wild Pokémon to battle.

Searching through the grass, the trainer would not find a pokemon. In fact a pokemon would find them, this pokemon resembled a snake. Purple in color with a golden ringlet around its neck and a gold colour rattle. The tongue of the pokemon gently moving backwards and forwards, in and out of its mouth with an odd twitch in its movement. It had coiled itself around the tree trunk but now moved to curl around itself for easier movement as it kept its gaze upon the female and the bird. A hiss would escape its mouth before it stated its name loud enough for the pokemon and her trainer to hear. "EKAAAANSSSS" it hissed. Whether the pokemon trainer and her pokemon looked or not the snake would make its move, pouncing from the tree aiming to clamp its jaws upon the bird type pokemon with the technique known as bite.

Name: Ekans

"KATRINA," Elle shouted as her eyes caught the wild Ekans as it was about to pounce. "WATCH OUT!" Startled, Katrina pivoted to face the direction where the cry she heard came from. She didn't have the time to act, evade or do anything as fangs dug into her feathered skin. The painful, but not venomous bite caused her to cry in agony.

"That stung, are you alright, Katrina," Elle checked on her Pokémon. Katrina replied with her own cry, making it clear that she's up for the challenge.

"That's comforting! Use Wing Attack," said Elle. Katrina's wings would glow white and she would hit the wild Ekans with one of them.

The powerful fangs would strike down upon the bird type pokemon, it being an evolved pokemon had significantly more strength and health than the base form ekans yet it would still succumb to the pain. unclamping its jaws to allow the snake to come to the ground it would view the bird pokemon. The shining wings would strike the snakes under belly just as it attempted to rise. Being pushed back a few inches it would retaliate by opening its mouth and releasing a spray of hundreds of little white needles that contained a venom. The spray was all shot in one direction and in a compressed beam of miniture needles, the ekans would await the outcome.

This time, the wild Ekans wasn't so lucky as Katrina evaded. She glided away as the venomous needles darted skyward past her, its sharpness and whiteness shimmered from the sun's light.

"Fly a little higher," Elle said, having a creative attack pictured in her mind. Katrina hovered overhead the wild Ekans.

"With your Quick Attack, whip Ekans to a tree," Elle said. With great speed, Katrina would dive, grab the wild Ekans by its mouth with her feet, and attempt to whip the reptilian foe to a nearby tree with great might.

It would be the end for the ekans, being a rather weak pokemon in itself, the duel strike of the wing attack, and the quick attack with the combination of using the environment would halt any further movement from the snake type pokemon. The poison based snake would simply lay defeated awaiting its fate. The trainer had two options allow it to regain conciousness and slink away, gaining exp for doing so, or utilizing the capture device known as pokeballs to capture and bond with the reptile.

Delighted with her own victory against the wild Ekans, Katrina landed on a tree branch. She used Roost; her body glowed brightly and she rejuvenated her health back to perfection.

"Kat, you are awesome! Come, we have to move on," Elle said to Katrina, showing no interest with capturing the wild Pokémon they just laid waste. Katrina returned to her trainer's shoulder.

~ Intro to Training Post (words not counted) ~

Intelligent - this would be a great noun to describe Norris (Combusken), and 'practical' would be another. Bored inside his Poké Ball, Norris wanted to make efficient use of time. Were he to do nothing but remain inside his Poké Ball while Elle and Katrina would train for an hour or two, time would be wasted. He decided to escape from his Poké Ball.

"I'll have an exercise routine so I, too, will become stronger," Norris said to Elle before dashing off towards a basal area, insensitive towards his trainer's permission.

"He's so headstrong and reckless," Elle, with a smile on her face, mumbled to Katrina.

~ Training Post Starts (start word count) ~

Norris began what he liked to call 'Woodsman Workout' with some deep breathing exercises to clear his mind and oxygenate his blood for the vigorous activity he's about to take part in.  A proper breath originates in the diaphragm. He slowly breathed in the fresh forest air through his nose. As he inhaled, he imagined his lungs filling up from the bottom to the top. He exhaled through his mouth. He imagined the air in his lungs emptying from the top to the bottom. He knew he was breathing correctly because he can see that his belly moves in and out and his chest and shoulders stay still.

He took 20 deep breaths. Norris focused on the sound of his breath and the bubbling brook beside him.

Hiking serves as the foundation of the Woodsman Workout. In between the various exercises, Norris is constantly moving because he's constantly hiking. Norris would try to hike about 5k. He kept a brisk pace while he hiked, but made sure he took some breaks to really soak in the scenery. He performed each of the exercises he had in mind whenever nature moved him to do so, and as soon as he finished an exercise, he would start hiking again immediately.

As Norris was hiking and taking in the view, he was on the lookout for logs for hefting and hoisting. He found a fantastic log from a white birch tree on the side of one of the trails that was perfect for lifting. It weighed a good 75 pounds.

Squats are a great way to develop the lower body strength needed for powering through long hikes and putting unruly moose in leglocks. While the back squat (with the weight on the back of his shoulders) is the best squat exercise to activate all the muscles in his lower body, he opted for a front squat in his Woodsman Workout because he didn’t have a squat rack and he wanted to focus on his core and quads, which the front squat does.

He hoisted his log from the ground and into his arms. The log rested as high up on his arms as it can.

He slowly squatted until his thighs are parallel with the ground. Because his hamstrings are less taut during the front squat, he's actually able to get a deeper squat with less strain, so he felt free to “break parallel” if he wanted. While he squated, he focused on keeping his torso straight. He did 3 sets of 8 reps, resting a minute between each set.

The shoulder press is one of Norris's favourite exercises; it’s even more awesome when performed with a giant birch tree log. The overhead press works his entire body: shoulders, upper-chest, core, and legs. The log’s girth makes the lift a bit more difficult because he has to activate different muscles to maintain hold of the log during the lift.

He hoisted his log to the top of his chest. He gripped the log about an inch or two outside shoulder-width. His feet are about shoulder-width apart, and he looked straight ahead.

Then, he pressed the log over his head. As he lifted, he exhaled. When the log passed his forehead, he shifted his torso forward and continued lifting the log. He locked his elbows when he reached the end of the lift and held for a second. He slowly lowered the log back to the starting position, inhaling as he did so. That’s one rep. He did 3 sets of 8 reps, resting one minute between each set.

For the next workout, Norris  performed bear crawls through the woods. There’s nothing much to them. He just got down on all fours and crawled like a bear, making sure his knees didn’t touch the ground. He performed the bear crawl in one minute spurts whenever he felt like it during his hike. He shot for 5 crawls during his hike.

People toss medicine balls in the gym. The equivalent of that in the Woodsman Workout is boulder tossing. Tossing heavy boulders is a full body workout. Norris works his back, chest, legs, arms, shoulders, and core. Best of all, he found it fun to throw heavy things around in the woods.

Norris selected a good sized boulder. His weighed about 50 pounds, give or take. He bended down with his legs to pick up the rock and lifted it to his chest.

He hurled the rock up and out by pushing his arms up from his chest as fast as he can. He enjoyed watching the boulder hurtle through the air and land on the ground with a big thud. Then, he picked it back up and threw it again. He did 3 sets of 5 throws, resting 1-2 minutes between each set.

He worked his quads with the front squat, so now he needed to hit his hammies and glutes. Lunging through the woods with a log hoisted above his head will do the trick.

He began with the log hoisted above his head. He lunged forward with his right leg until his right thigh is perpendicular with the ground. His left knee came close to touching the ground. He pushed up with his left leg and without hesitating lunged forward with his left leg until his left thigh is perpendicular with the ground. He kept alternating like this for about a minute. He rested for a minute, then repeated two more times.

Norris included an exercise called the “Lumberjack Press” in the Woodsman Workout. The lumberjack press is a great shoulder exercise. It also activates his core muscles in order to keep the log straight and balanced during the lift.

He began by hoisting his log lengthwise onto his right shoulder. He gripped the log in the center with both hands — the left hand in front, the right behind — so the log is nice and balanced. He lifted the log above his head, making sure it remained straight during the lift. It was harder than he thought it would be. Then, he lowered the log onto his left shoulder. He lifted the log again and rested it on his right shoulder. He completed 2 sets of 5 reps. When he finished his first set, he switched his hands so that his right hand is in front and his left is in the back. That worked his left shoulder more.

~ Training Post Finishes (total word count: 1,067) ~

When Norris was finished, he walked to the nearest body of water and drank from it. He sprawled out on the ground, closed his eyes and fell asleep.

~ Role-play Continuation ~
Meanwhile, Elle and Katrina were having a conversation.

"I hate it when I meow to cats and they don't meow back. Unbelievably rude," Elle said to Katrina, to which Katrina giggled in response.

"Elle, I just realized. I'm strong enough to take on this Falkner's Pokémon. How come we're not challenging him yet?"

"I thought it would be easier to defeat Falkner with an Ice or Electric Pokémon. We will be needing one of either for the rest of our journey anyway."

~ OOC ~
I couldn't decide how to finish this post open-ended. Perhaps a foe could interrupt their conversation? :)

[Handled].

A rustling could be heard, followed by quick moving footsteps. From the trees around emerged a man, black hair and red eyes with a rather basic outfit. A single pokeball hung from his neck revealing that he was of the same type as the female. A pokemon trainer, his eyes found the females and that would be enough to signify what was going to happen. "Booyah, bout time a found me a trainer, get ready cuz ima take you down missy" he would state. Instead of utilizing the pokeball upon his neck he would reach in to his pocket to take out a single sphere, with a touch it would grow to the proper size, he was not one to throw the pokeball so with another touch of the button it would open within his palm. The light would shoot forth revealing his pokemon.

The pokemon revealed would be one not from this region. A beautiful long necked pokemon whom stood at four feet tall. The dinosaur like pokemon was blue in color and had a single jewel upon either side. It would release a soft gentle noise in the sound of its name Amaura it would state gently. "Meet Matilda, shes a cool one right" the boy would say grinning.
